GORE-TEX® membrane
GORE-TEX®: the world leader in waterproof and breathable membranes equips FIVE gloves
To keep your hands dry when riding in rainy weather, we equip our mid-season gloves, winter gloves, and heated gloves with a waterproof, breathable membrane. The global benchmark for waterproof breathable membranes is GORE-TEX®. It was therefore natural for FIVE, as a glove specialist, to partner with GORE-TEX®, a specialist in waterproof breathable membranes, to supply us with the membranes used in our high-end waterproof glove models.
To understand the concept simply, a waterproof breathable membrane is like a micro-perforated plastic envelope shaped like an enlarged hand, whose pores (micro-perforations) are large enough to allow the evaporation of water vapor formed by perspiration (it is said to be breathable), and narrow enough to prevent raindrops from penetrating (it is said to be waterproof).
The GORE-TEX® membrane is placed between the glove's outer structure (made of water-repellent fabric, leather, or a combination of both) and the insulating wadding (in the case of thermal insulation) or inner lining (in the case of no insulation), in order to prevent the latter from becoming saturated with water or condensation. This is how your hands can stay dry in the rain. Provided, of course, that raindrops do not penetrate the glove by running down the cuff (which you should ensure by positioning the glove and jacket correctly when getting dressed).
The waterproof membrane also acts as a windbreaker, which is enough to make this type of glove more pleasant than a standard glove when it’s simply cool outside, in the morning or evening, for example.
The right to incorporate GORE-TEX® membrane into our products must be earned and requires obtaining a license from the global leader. After a lengthy validation process, GORE-TEX® only grants this license to brands and production units that it selects based on extremely rigorous criteria, ensuring that the final product featuring a GORE-TEX® membrane will provide complete satisfaction to consumers in terms of waterproofing and breathability. This is the famous "Guaranteed to Keep You Dry" claim made and upheld by GORE-TEX®.
Adopting a GORE-TEX® membrane is just one step. Each glove model featuring this membrane, along with its components, undergoes laboratory testing to obtain GORE-TEX® validation for its overall waterproof and breathable qualities, beyond the characteristics of the membrane alone. Similarly, the factories where gloves featuring this membrane are assembled are tested before obtaining GORE-TEX® certification.
We therefore pay particular attention to the various components of the glove, ensuring that the materials used to construct its outer shell do not compromise the exceptional properties of the membrane in any way.
This involves ongoing communication between FIVE's design and development teams and GORE-TEX®'s technical teams, both in the design and manufacturing processes for FIVE x GORE-TEX® models.
Beyond the label and guarantee provided by the GORE-TEX® name, there are several types of membranes and ways of assembling them within the glove structure.
This membrane can be assembled in different ways. It can be partially bonded or fully bonded at the fingers and palm. This affects how the handlebars feel.
High-end fully bonded membranes (GORE-TEX® Grip Fully Bonded) may feel a little stiffer at first, but they offer better grip on the handlebars and controls. They are therefore the preferred choice.
As you can see, having a GORE-TEX® membrane in your gloves is a guarantee of quality and comfort when riding in the rain. Above all, it is the best way to stay comfortably dry for longer.
